Within open field vegetable farming, a constant product flow is essential. Especially when processing and cleaning large batches of round cabbage, every workstation must receive sufficient product, without employees having to wait for each other or being overloaded.
At this customer, cabbage was manually distributed across the cleaning stations. This made it difficult to keep the workload evenly balanced. One employee could temporarily receive too much cabbage, while another workstation came to a standstill. This had an impact on the atmosphere on the work floor, throughput time and total production capacity.
The question to Tegra Systems was clear: how can we automatically, controlled and fairly distribute a large flow of cabbage across sixteen workstations?
The solution: a custom 16-station sorting line
Tegra Systems developed a fully customer-specific sorting line that automates the logistics around the cleaning process. The line ensures that the incoming cabbage is distributed in a controlled manner across all active stations.
The installation consists of, among other things:
- A custom-made conveyor belt of 25 meters long
- One continuous belt construction for reliable product throughput and minimal wear
- Sixteen automated ejection mills
- A smart PLC control system, developed and programmed by Tegra Systems
- A system that weighs and counts the incoming cabbage for a balanced distribution
The cabbage is fed along the various workstations via the long conveyor. Based on weight, quantities and the current distribution, the PLC control system determines which station receives product. The ejection mills then direct the cabbages in a controlled manner to the correct cleaning spot.
This creates a continuous product flow in which every employee is equally supplied with cabbage.
The results
With the new sorting line, the customer has made an important efficiency improvement within the cleaning process.
Even workload across sixteen stations
The PLC control system automatically and proportionally distributes the cabbage across the active workstations. As a result, employees continuously receive product and waiting times or peak loads are minimized.
Higher throughput speed
Thanks to the 25-meter conveyor and the automatic ejection to the correct stations, the line can efficiently process large volumes of round cabbage. This supports a higher and more consistent production capacity.
More control over sorting
Because the cabbage is weighed and counted before it reaches the cleaning stations, direct insight and control over the distribution of the batch is created.
Less manual logistics
